Saving Money – I was able to get FEMA mandated flood insurance off my house and detached garage!

Another day to be thankful!

I bought a house very close to the Connecticut River.  I was told I only needed flood insurance in my detached garage when I bought the house. Then I found out FEMA revised the flood maps so I needed to get a new waiver.

I had an elevation certificate from the previous owners. I found Robert Sonnichsen (203) 453-4386 on the Agawam Forums. I spoke to him once or twice and the rest has been emailed. His email is rsonnichsen@gmail.com from Waldon LLC.  Originally, I sent him the elevation certificate, map, and deed through email.  You pay for it once he has submitted the work to FEMA.  They take credit cards over the phone.  Because I had to have him do the waiver twice it cost me around $800.  This was no fault of Robert Sonnichsen.

I had to do a second FEMA waiver. I didn’t realize the detached garage was not on the elevation certificate.

I used Anderson Associates in Agawam to complete an elevation certificate on my detached garage their phone number 413-525-4145.  They were very responsive. They took a check and I think the detached garage was about $350.  And I sent the information to Robert Sonnichsen again.  I didn’t even call him. Just sent him the info then waited.  It took a few months for FEMA to approve it.

Before you contact Rob make sure you have an elevation certificate for the house and detached garage.

Also, FEMA only allows flood insurance to be changed once a year.
